What is constipation?

Constipation or irregular bowel movement is when a child has delay or difficulty in passing stools, usually less than 3 stools per week. Child suffers from pain and discomfort as the stool hardens in the colon.

Causes of constipation

High intake of processed food, junk food or less intake of fibres as well as fluids, reduces the good bacteria in the gut which leads to constipation

Withholding behaviour of the child

Sedentary lifestyle

Changes in routine

Early toilet training

Signs & symptoms of constipation

Less than 3 bowel movements per week

Abdominal pain due to hard and dry stool

Current treatment

Laxatives are most commonly used. Unfortunately none of them addresses imbalance in the gut microflora

Laxatives are not tailor made for children
